Montelungo to Pontremoli 21/8/17

21/8/17 Monday
Day 23

Montelungo-Pontremoli 24 km

Blue skies, warm

I leave the village early and promptly walk in the wrong direction; stealthily I creep back, relieved all the villagers are still asleep.
Arrive Pontremoli 1100 after walking through mainly (challenging) forest- slipping in sandals worn in order to rest the sole of my foot.
Calm, peaceful, a stream.
No people during the entire route. I meet a squirrel.

Gelato in the square at Pontremoli. I walk to the monastery and just catch the keeper as she is leaving; she assigns me a private room for only 10 Euro.
Outside my window hangs a church bell in a blue sky.
There are fantastic facilities on the VF (in comparison with the Camino) provided by the Catholic church. My room even has a basin.

Medieaval town: knights, flags, towers, arches, turrets, stone foot-bridges.
I realise I have been alone all day and I'm not lonely.
I realise the simplicity of this life: the same clothes every day, a naked face.
Sleep for 2 hours in my private-room-with-a-basin.
I walk the narrow cobbled alleys only an arm-span wide in 25 degrees at 1830 and visit churches.
