Orsieres to Bourg St-Pierre 2/8/17
2/8/17 Wednesday
Day 6
Orsieres- Bourg St-Pierre 14 km
Sun, hot 30+ degrees
Up 0530.
We have left by 0615 and walk
continuously uphill for three and a half hours without food.
I scavenge wild raspberries and
periodically lick one lolly I find in my pack. We pass several tiny
villages without facilities, and signs which persist, no matter that
we have advanced along the route, in indicating that Liddes is
1h55min away.
More climbs along forested tracks.
We arrive in Liddes where the excellent
restaurant serves us two rounds of door-stopper cheese and mustard
sandwiches, fresh orange juice and strong coffee with little biscuits
(which I bury in my pack in case of emergency).
Upwards along mountainous vistas:
wildflowers and herbs in the meadows, snowy peaks in the distance.
Pass only two hikers.
In the searing heat we gladly come to a
river dashing over boulders. As I soak my feet in the cool waters,
I'm reminded of humans' basic needs: water, shade, food.
Slow progress as we stop every several
hundred meters to replenish, drink and stand under trees.
Arrive BSP 1300 and take a little room
on the main road in a guest house reeking of cigarette smoke.
The floors squeak as the one other
guest in another room walks around and the traffic noise from the
road keeps us awake most of the night.
