Pontremoli to Aulla 22/8/17

22/8/17 Tuesday
Day 24

Pontremoli-Aulla 32 km

Such a liberty to arise when the rooster crows.

An easy tread through forests and lowlands with the Apennines on my left.
I use all my senses; in my solitude I speak to myself without words. Music.
Lost in ease.

Meet two French pilgrims walking to Lucca and a pilgrim further on camped in a field who looks more like a dispossessed individual. I meet this hermit later in Aulla; he speaks Spanish, has taken thousands of photos which he shows me. He has an affinity for camping in the 'mountanes' by a stream where he can wash. The hermit and I smoke and drink beer; he offers to pay for my drink.

At 0900 I'm surprised I have, according to Cicerone, walked only 6 km and then realise I have been on the Sloways route instead!
Forest walking- up and down, with shoes on today and feeling no pain.
Break out of the forest to a glorious mountain view. I have for company, the rustling of lizards and the occasional duet of birds.

I reacquaint with my Italian friends at Ostello San Caprazio at 1700 after filling in time beer-drinking with the Spanish hermit.
Virgoleta- the most amazing village with high stone walls.
Filetto- over half-way on the Italian leg.

Today I met a gentleman disguised as a hermit.
